Everyone on the planet has stress. Nobody gets out alive without some. Unfortnately though stress management is one of the most important skills to learn, it's not taught in school and is often gleaned in a really non instinctive way and we often need much more specific instruction!

DBT teaches this in terms of Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotional Regulation... but I like to connect it with Somatic work (emotions, feelings in the body, connecting the two) and of course my number two favorite topic, the Polyvagal system, aka Human Reset Button.

So getting down to business here because all our stress is so high and we don't need to read a book here. Try these human resets:

  1. Hot Shower or Bath.

  2. Drinking a glass of water or a warm beverage.

  3. Humming.

  4. Singing loudly.

  5. The Vagal Sigh.

  6. Grounding (touch grass, dirt, natural water, sand...if it's raining, touch a tree. You exchange electrons with the earth).

  7. Plunging your face into a bowl of cold water. (Fastest reset if you are upset or teary).
