When you have experienced trauma the Vagus Nerve system gets "off kilter." The Vagus Nerve's main body functions control the heart, lungs/breathing, and the digestive system. The Vagus nerve is part of the Parasympathetic Nervous System and is "overruled" if the sympathetic nervus system is engaged (such as when you are being chased by a Saber Tooth Tiger, which is totally a thing that could happen.
